I have a 9 month male German Shepherd. About 1 month ago I found a small swelling behind his right elbow. I kept checking it periodically and it has gotten bigger during the past several weeks. It feels like fluid and does not cause him any discomfort. The dog remains very active and this swelling doesn't seem to cause him any problem. Right now it is approx. 1/2 htodd@selu.edu the size of a tennis ball. Should I take him to the vet as soon as possible or is there another remedy?
It's time to take your dog in and have preliminay hip and elbow x-rays. Sounds like a bad elbow.
Pick your Vet carefully. Read the article I wrote on how to position hips for x-rays. Print it out and show him what you expect before he does the x-ray. Positioning is so very important.
Not all Vets are the same when it comes to hip x-rays
Seen and heard of this many times...Many times due to the dog slamming down on his elbows when lying down and sometimes due to injury when playing or jumping (stress on joints)...Drainage of the joint and rubber padding in the crate and kennel may be necessary...but definitely take him/her to the vet or better yet a canine orthopedic specialist. Until he/she's seen keep the movement restricted (ie., leash and crate rest). Good Luck.
