Thank you, you have given the info I was looking for. Now Luke may not have to give me those pitifull looks any longer. LOL!
But good for your wife that she attends to his ears regularly.
Having learned a lot about canine ear infections (yeast, bacterial, and combo), I now check my dogs' ears regularly.
My rule number one is "Don't touch them if they are in great shape."
But number two is that if I see any inflammation or debris at all, I use a foaming ear cleanser that dries itself afterward (the one I use is called "Flush," from the vet's office). The most important part is to let the dog's natural shaking do the work.
I squirt it in, then use the ear to smoosh it around (which you hear when you fold down the flap and gently push it from side to side to move the cleanser around).
Then I stand back. The dog will shake it out, dislodging debris and moving it toward the outer ear.
Then I remove it with a soft cloth, etc., from the inside of the flap.
If I see any sign of infection (bright red inside, odor, a lot of ear shaking, pain on touching the area, debris that looks grayish or slimy, or the dog holding his head tilted), then he goes to the vet.
But with regular inspection, many ear infections can be nipped in the bud, and that's the big goal.
Ear infections are very painful and can cause bad trouble if left untreated.
