My department has recently given permission to one of its deputies to allow him to breed his AKC GSD bitch with the departments service dog. This raised a question in my mind about the registration of the puppies. Since the service dog is not an AKC registered dog, how would they go about getting any type of registration? It may be a stupid question, but it just made me wonder.
The dogs will not be able to be registered with the AKC. Future owners may obtain ILP numbers through AKC should they wish to compete in events other than conformation.

Depends. Does the PSD have FCI registration? If he's not registered with any FCI or AKC recognized body- than no the pups can't be AKC registered. If he is, but it just hasn't been transfered to the AKC, then there is a possibility the pups can be registered.
But then again- do the potential buyers of that litter care?
Thats pretty much what I figured. I am not sure if he is registered with any FCI, but I know he is not registered with the AKC and that our department probably has no plans to do any kind of transfer to the AKC. I am sure buyers of the litter would be happy with the lineage, but there is no way for any future litters of that breeding to be registered, even tough it would have good genetics. So would that make the pups he has worth less then pups that came from an AKC to AKC breeding?
Just as a side thought, if the PSD is a law enforcement owned dog, it would be unethical for the handler to profit. The dog belongs to the taxpayers.

probably what going happen is in the break room is "Hey guys who wants some nice puppies from Pyscho and Maggie, Its going to be a crackerjack litter, definatley going to be a surprise in that box of pups"
And what would be the purpose of the breeding??? If you think you're going to get more police dogs your odds are better playing the lottery. Puppies are a crap-shoot....
Leave the breeding to breeders who know something about genetics, even they have problems and are lucky to get police dog quality in a litter.
Just to clarify, I am not doing the breeding. It was originaly just a question about whether or not the pups could be registered. Not sure what his purpose of the breeding is. Thanks again for all your comments.
