...and i've been around the block enough times to know that when somebody starts asking questions such as the ones in this thread that there are thoughts of breeding going on. just love this guy for what he is, have fun and train him in something you will both enjoy doing. in that light, his lineage is really unimportant.
Patricia, you may have had numerous experiences with "these types of questions" and have obviously seen these types of questions turn into inexperienced breeding, effectually an insult to the GSD. I commend you for standing strong in your conviction to protect the breed. Perhaps you could start a new thread on that topic...or perhaps post photos of various GSD's with a poll attached "is this dog stud material"
Your response to what was asked initially in this thread, IMO was a flagrant assumption. I have asked similiar questions when I didn't have my dog's pprs (they were locked in file cabinet with no key) and matter of fact, was hoping for links to health issues/genetic history because of his current health...trying to find answers the vet didn't have and thought perhaps my dog's lineage could help. NO intention of breeding whatsoever.
Also, *you* may think the lineage is unimportant if you are not breeding...though I found some very trivial but fascinating facts about my dog's heritage when I finally did get a replacement key for the file cabinet and researched his lines. In that light, I feel glad and honored to know his heritage.
Nathan~good luck in your search, it can be pretty painstaking and time consuming, even with pprs , but will be worth it in the long run. Have fun!

Hi Nathan,
What qualities does this dog have that make him "awesome"?
What are your plans for him?
I can understand being curious about his lineage just for the sake of knowing...I would probably want to know myself. However, a good dog is a good dog regardless of his lineage. If you like him that's what counts.
As for wanting to know for health reasons .....I'm not sure that it really makes a difference. Health issues aren't treated til symptoms appear anyway. Unless you plan on breeding.
Must say that I agree with Roger and Patricia. Dogs that are going to be used for breeding should be of outstanding quality.
Regards,
Debbie

If the dude whats to breed his dog ..you dont have a say in it one way or another...and once again, a person ask a question and the question wasnt even about breeding his dog and suddenly he becomes a backyard breeder and the dog isnt worth the money he paid even if it was free..the standards arent being kept.etc etc...walla walla bing bang crazy man crazy man....WOW...
ok everyone take a deep breath...
So what does it take to be a breeder??????
How does one start?????
Do you buy out a breeder that has a rep already????
Do you call the main factory that produces them and order say a dozen to resell???
Were do i get my liscense to sell???
Or is it as simple as having enough money to buy a couple of well titled dogs and put the shingle out on the front door????
Thinking about opening a kennel myself cant be that hard not like its a real business ....
How about Backyard breeder R US or maybe WE BEE Backyard Breeder....

I don't get it. He specifically said he has no intention of breeding his dog, yet people are assuming, that because he wants to get background on his guy that he has intentions of doing just that???
And why wouldn't him wanting to find out about possible health issues be relevant??? Of course health issues aren't treated until they appear, who treats a dog with no sysmptons?? But knowing, is half the battle. If he knows now that there's a possibility down the road that his guy may have hip problems, he will be better prepared for it.
No, I don't agree with breeding for breedings sake. But lets not all assume thats the reason he's looking for information.
Just like you want information on a car that you're going to buy. Wouldn't you like to know what its track record is???
And before anyone says it, yes I know dogs aren't like cars.
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |

I've done extensive research into the lineage and backgrounds of my spayed and neutered rescue dogs just because I was curious and wanted to know a little more about them. I totally get why someone whould want to know. It doesn't mean that the guy is going to breed his dog. Not sure where THAT assumption came from. But if he finds out this dog is something special on paper and in real life and decides to do just that; who's business would it be?
Good luck with your research, Nathan. If your dog is microchipped or tattoo'd, check in with the AKC's CAR program. The registration # and full name are usually listed. You can also try going to them with the name of the original owner. They may not be able to give you info, but they may be able to let you know if there IS info.

Hi Nathan. If there are any GSD breed clubs in Colorado perhaps they could provide you with a list of breeders within the state. Likewise you may try contacting the AKC or maybe some of the GSD Rescue groups located in Colorado.
That said, the first source I would attempt to contact would be your friend's ex. Perhaps she would be willing to provide you with the answers you need and save you the effort of contacting all the GSD breeders in Colorado .
Whatever your motives are for wanting to research your pup's genetic history, this is not our business and is completely irrevent to your question.... good luck in your search! I hope you find what you are looking for.

David you need to post a thread about the questions you asked. They are good ones Maybe a PRofessical breeder can help us out to understand "what makes you a Proffessional breeder" . I said it before and I will say it again BECARE what you post. People are always tring to read between the lines. If people would just answer the question asked.
Question "IF" the owner wanted to do ScHH/BH would he not have to have a pedigree on the dog? Even with UKC you have to have a pedigree on the dog just to do obedience. If he is a good dog and they work as a team why not take him to get titles to show all the hard work they done together? There are many spayed and nuetered dogs that have titles on them due to the owners ENJOY working thier dogs NOT breeding.

Unregistered dogs can be shown and titled in most working/performance venues such as SchH/IPO & Ringsport.
My wife is currently working a nice unregistered dog in Human Remains Detection & SchH. Wish's Page

Thanks John I did not know that you can title with SchH with an unregistered dog I learn something new everyday.
I do know there are many Therapy dogs that are not papered or purebred.
