Hi all,
I have a Boerboel that has just turned 5 months and is around 75 lbs. We have just finished our basic OB class and are now begining intermediate OB. In the past corrections with the flat collar had been more than sufficient. Lately as he has gotten bigger and stronger, those corrections are not effective. For any reaction I have to correct him so forcefully, he'll cough and gak. The trainer reccomended a pinch. We tried it on him last night on the dead ring, and of course, only the slightest correction was needed. My question is, is he still too young for this training method?
I'm not a fan of correcting young puppies or doing too much obedience training (anything requiring corrections) until at least six months (even that is young). I do make one exception though: If I have a large, strong puppy who pulls on the leash I WILL use a prong collar and let the pup self-correct until I have fully taught the pup to walk politely. They're still babies at 5 months; even though some of them are BIG babies Just be mindful of your pups age. Correcting hard enough to get a cough and gag response can do damage. Because your pup is so big, you're probably okay with the prong as long as you don't expect too much from your puppy. Let him have some puppy time
Hi Kristel,
Thanks for your reply. I really do want to enjoy his puppy time. They only stay pups for such a short time! I probably should have explained the forceful correction thing better. He truly enjoys training and usually only needs the slightest tug on a flat collar for corrections on typical commands (sit, down, stay etc...) The corrections that make him cough happen when he has lost his mind over greeting people or dogs. He is so big and all that flailing, pawing, straining at the leash, jumping etc.. gets out of hand and can take someone out! When I try to correct him or even hold him off is when the coughing/gagging happens. Thats why I am considering using the prong on the dead ring. Just to let him self correct and bring him back to sanity. I just don't want to be too harsh on him when he is so young.
Oh boy do I get that! Sounds like you have the right idea. Your pup is really big, as my current pup is. Keeping them under control around people and other dogs can be tough. Also try distracting with food (something your dog REALLY loves) when you get in that situation. Eventually whenever the dog meets someone new they'll be in the habit of looking to you for a treat instead of trying to jump at the new person.
