Man something new every day... today when I cleaned up Kanes poop I noticed worms in it. Now I inspect his poop everyday so Im pretty sure that I didnt notice anything before. Now I dont notice them in all of his poop just that one. This does mean he has worms right? As stupid as that may sound... I mean theres no chance that the worms got in there after the fact?
I feel terrible! No wonder the poor little guy seems to have upset stomach! But when the diarrhea thing started I looked for those dame little things and never saw once worm! So now my question is what kind of wormer do I need? I bought some wormer at the grocery store since it was right there. I think I have heard that it doesnt work... but I felt so bad thinking of those things crawling in him that I got it hoping it would help. So I gave him his dose but how do I know when and if it works? And what kind of wormer do I need and where can I get it if the kind I bought is no good? And if I have to get it from the vet do I have to take him in? Right now it seems that the vet I have is the type to try to get me to spend more $ than what I need to. So if I can aviod a visit I will. What do you guys think??
You do not need to take the dog to the vet. Take in a stool sample (fresh) and they can do a fecal to see exactly what worms he has. They do not need them to be visible to the naked eye. Some worms will not be covered by a multi-wormer that you will find over the counter, such as tapeworms.
The fecal shouldn't be more than like $10, and then you know exactly what you are trying to treat.
I am going to assume that you potty this dog in an area totally separate from where the kids you watch play and that you do pick up the poop...
Certain worms can and do infect human children -- Isn't it hookworm that can get inside the skin and crawl up the legs. If you have tapeworms, it is probably because of fleas.
Also going to assume this puppy is on adequate flea and heartworm control as injested fleas are a source of tapeworms. Ever since the new generation of flea control, I have not seen a tapeworm on any of my animals......those were what I would ocassionaly see before then.
I think it is also important to keep potty areas clean. Don't leave poop laying out in the yard, scoop it up daily and get rid of it. You don't want your dog reinspecting it later or worse eating it and picking up things from it after the fact. I've had the same problems in the past when my dogs were young and a prompt visit to the vet took care of it. You can try just taking in the fecal sample to get it tested, but I know in my area the vet is going to ask to see the dog anyway.
Of course Kane dosent potty where the kids play... I think most parents with common sense should know that! At least I would hope so! And yes he is on a flea program, but as some of you know I was battling fleas there for a while when that one dose of frontline didnt work.
Now as for the worm... they didnt look like spaghetti... they looked kinda short and fat, but looked like two different colors not the colors of a maggot. ANd they wiggled around like crazy!Never seen a worm like this. I will takew in a sample today.
Also since I have been dealing with Kanes diarrhea I have had him on a raw diet. This has helped some. It has firmed it up some but still mixed with runny. (must be from the worms)
Now I know this might sound stupid, since sh*t is supposed to stink and not smell like roses... but how bad is it supposed to smell on a raw diet? And I have heard of additives you can add to food to help the smell. Has anyone heard of this?
Now I do pick up his poop everyday, but when you step out side in his area... plus Im sure the neighbors just love the whif they get on their side of the fence! And there isnt always times when I can go out and pick it up as soon as he goes, like when were not home etc. Just wondering if Raw diets are as smelly as kibble? Or if its normal for all sh*t to stink? LOL
