Hello everyone. I have a new GDS puppy coming home in a few weeks. The breeder has just started weening the puppy on a kibble mixed with raw hamburger and other meats. I plan on going to raw diet and was wondering if I should continue to use a kibble/raw blend and slowly start fading out the kibble or just go to raw right away?
I think I'd do it slowly, over a week or two, as your new pup will have enough new things to deal with when you get him/her home. I just switched my 2 cats (which I just got from the pound) over to raw slowly over a week. Well, mostly raw, they also get a handful of good kibble to nibble on during the day.
I know there's also a bunch of threads on this, just do a search for raw-feeding. You might also want to look at Ed's main site, under "Feeding Dogs."
It's not a good idea to feed kibble & raw at the same meal...they digest at a very different rate of speed...raw takes about 5-6 hous & kibble takes about 14 hours. If you feed both feed one at the breakfast meal & the other at dinner. Good luck with your new pup.

I'm with Anne. The kibble forces the raw into unnaturally prolonged contact with the dog's system. His natural resistance against pathogens (which is his short and fast digestive system) is then partly lost.
Also, by then, the pup might well be ready for the final switch.
You know I always wondered about that, I had heard in the past not to ever mix kibbles with raw but never found out why since I feed raw. Interesting.I always get new info on feed in this web site more than any other web site. But more important I don't think they have a "Connie Sutherland" on their discussion forum website, they should get one cause Connie, your are full of good info and so detailed!
Thank you all! I just ordered a few more books from Ed on Raw, the ones the give out with their new puppies. There is so much info to digest, process and apply on this subject. And it seems that everyone has an opinion that varies from one degree to the other. IMO this site seems to be the best resource thanks to all of you. Pet stores and Vets seem to be stuck in there ways and don't want to educate themselves. My vet just told me to use kibble and stay away from Raw, so I just asked for my 3yr old GSD/mix's med records and am now looking for a new vet.
Thanks again, I am sure to have more questions for you all soon.
My dog is 10 1/2 months old. The breeder we bought him from feeds half raw meat and half kibble, and we've continued to do the same, though we've tried different meats and different kibbles. Right now I have THK I'm waiting to try, as soon as we get to the bottom of his current bag of kibble.
Our experience is that any change to his diet causes him to vomit if we introduced the change too quickly. So we introduce all changes slowly over about a week.
