My 6yo gsd has gingivitis. I was wondering if anyone knows of some good health products to try to improve her gum health. She gets fresh water daily and I have been using CET dental rinse and toothpaste, but she still has it. Thanks.
She is due for her appointment next month to get a checkup for her lyme disease, so she will be checked again. My vet pointed it out to me this summer but it doesn't seem to have improved any with the products I am using. Other than these 2 things she is in good health. No teeth have fallen out, one is slightly chipped but I think it was from her scraping one of her bottom teeth on old asphalt while playing ball.
I will go back to giving her rmb's once the holidays are over, since our freezer space is pretty limited right now and I have just been giving her kibble for the time being.
Hi Kimberly,
What's CET? Is that like a doggy toothpaste? I know you're supposed to brush their teeth every day if they don't get bones or chewing. I've also heard that you can "brush" the dog's teeth by wrapping a little bit of cloth around your finger & using that to gently massage the teeth & gums. I'm not sure how painful that would be for a dog which already has dental problems? Hmmm, just had a strange thought: how about a sonic toothbrush like what you'd use with a toddler? You'd certainly get more brushing in a shorter time frame...
LOL........ It's funny you should say something about a sonic toothbrush. I have a brush head just for her that I use on my rechargeable handle. She is a pain to try to brush her teeth, I also use a fingerbrush that she tends to like better since it's not noisy and doesn't vibrate. I use the rinse when I don't feel like holding her still for a long period of time. All you need to do with the rinse is squirt it along her gum lines.
CET is a brand name (C.E.T.), I have the toothpaste and a dental rinse that contains chlorhexidine gluconate, cetylpyridinium chloride and zinc.
I don't think she is in much pain from it, her gums are just discolored and not swollen from it. When I take her to the vet, he never gets a complete look in her mouth because she isn't the friendliest of pooches, but he can see in when she starts panting. I'm glad I found a vet that doesn't require the dog to be muzzled, he definitely takes his time with her and tries to make her feel very comfortable.
