Hello everyone, My pup now 14 months is coming along nice. However he is a bit of a “soft” dog and I have been doing obedience with just a flat collar. I really think that he needs something of a “medium” collar, I call it medium because there are collars for dominant dogs and well for “softer” dogs. Should I maybe try a “fur saver” on the dead ring? (as I think fur savers are choke collars with oval links) I really don’t think the “prong” would be appropriate for this dog as he might begin to resent obedience work. My goals for him are, possible CD and TD. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you feel you need to give the dog a correction, use a correction collar. A flat collar or Fur Saver isn't a correction collar. If you're not prepared to give the dog a correction, or if you're still deep in the teaching/learning phase then you need to re-evaluate your training methods/handling to get what you want from the dog sans the choke or pinch.
By 'soft', do you mean handler soft or soft to correction? You may want to consider using an e-collar b/c you can give a measured stim without the dog perceiving much handler involvement. If you go this route, find someone who is knowledgeable in using an e-collar.
John, I agree with you.
David, take a look at what you are trying to accomplish. I would thing that a good prong collar will do what you need. Personally, I love the prong collar. I find it an excellent tool in dog training. You can use it on the dead ring or live, again, depending on what you are trying to accomplish. Don’t fall into the idea that a prong collar is a torture device.
