My foster dog has been favouring his right hind leg on occassion. A trip to the vet has revealed a diagnosis of panosteitis...I'm sceptical...
It started with his refusing to put the leg down for a couple of steps and then acting like nothing was wrong. That was approximately 5 weeks ago. The dog is afraid of men and children and would not relax during an examination at the vet's office. I then took him in and he was sedated and x-rays were taken. The vet told me that it was panosteitis despite the initial concern that it was patellar luxation.
Since then it has progressively gotten worse. The vet told me that I could let him play with my dog. There have been several times that he has yelped in pain while playing. I have decided that they will no longer play together until this is resolved.
He is definitely favouring the leg and will sometimes refuse to put any weight on it for a couple of steps. The vet told me to give him Aspirin twice a day for a couple of weeks. That course of action was completed about 3 weeks ago. I gave him an Aspirin with his dinner this evening because it is obviously bothering him.
Does this sound like panosteitis?? If it does, I won't bother insisting to the rescue organization to bring him back to the vet. However, I'm concerned that he has been misdiagnosed.
It sounds like pano. My GSD had it for several months. Try lowering the protien level in hi diet to slow the growth. it should help to reduce it. by the way, my gsd had pano till he was almost 2 years of age. do lower his activity level as well.
Definitely sounds like pano.
I've got a 1 YO going through it right now. Symptoms are the same. In fact I had X-Rays done yesterday for his prelims. Hips look great, spine, elbows all good. He's just grown a little too fast.
Currently he's on Derramax. Very sparringly. Only when he's noticeably hurting. As David pointed out you want to keep the activity level low and very impact free. Not to mention a real shift in the amount of protein that he's receives. Pano can last up to and even past a year and a half.
I have been restricting his activity since he has gotten bad. Also, he is currently on adult food so I don't think the protein is an issue
Hi folks,my 14mo old male has started favoring his front leg.The vet says it's in the shoulder joint and is probably OCD.Is this similar to PANO? has anyone else ever experienced this?
