Just another note about Ed's article (http://leerburg.com/bridge.htm) :
It's what helped me determine when my previous beloved GSD should be put to sleep. After reading it, I realized that as soon as she showed no signs of joy at all in life, that would be the time. As Ed put it, not keeping her alive for me. I wanted to keep her alive for her, for as long as she wanted to be alive. So I observed her almost 24/7 so I could read when she let me know the time was right. And she made it obvious.
My last dog was a mixed breed. Her mom was GSD/collie and her dad was a Yellow Lab. Her name was Lucky and she was fed Purina Dog Chow until age 9 when she had colitis with bleeding bowel.
She recovered and we switched her food a few times to Performatrin kibble. She had no other health problems (other than voice box damage from using a choke chain, and deafness around age 13) until age 16 when she was diagnosed with malignant oral melanoma. Her subsequent decline in health was due directly to her cancer and not related to failing body systems. She died 2 months before her 18th birthday with all major organs in perfect health (except where they were affected by metastasis). She and I still went on a daily walk until she was 17 and a half years old.
I don't really understand Lucky's longevity and health, but I feed my current mixed breed dog, Emma, a much better diet (Wellness kibble) and sometimes raw. She adores raw food.
