We have a female (Abbi) that was a prolific poop eater. She was a pro. We also have her mother (Tess), who in her old age was starting to have trouble with allergies/ear infections/skin problems.
We switched to the BARF diet....100%.
Abbi's poop eating stopped... practially overnight, and the problem with Tess's allergies/infections disappeared within 48 hours or so.
A better diet definitely should help. And, if you add a little plain canned pumpkin to her food that should also help stop the behavior. If you see the dog doing it, be sure to correct her for it. Also, if you haven't done so, start teaching her a leave it command.
I wish just feeding raw was the fix for my pup...he's been on raw all his 5 month life and still eats his poo. Sometimes I can catch it before it happens, sometimes I can't. He eliminates quickly and turns immediately to eat it. My previous GSD literally ran away from her poo immediately after relieving herself (and she was on kibble and canned). I'll try Elaine's suggestion of canned pumpkin and see if it helps. The "phooey" command only works if I'm right at his side. I also am working on running him away from it, following the cue of the behavior of my previous GSD.
What to do for a rescue dog that's on a good diet, is older than dirt and eats EVERYONE'S poop if she has a chance? She came to me doing it. I finally got her a basket muzzle and covered the end with duct-tape. She still tries though. So gross...
