The following is a statement from
People for the "Ethical" Treatment of Animals:
"BREED SPECIFIC LEGISLATION (WITH A GRANDFATHER CLAUSE FOR THOSE
DOGS ALREADY IN EXISTENCE) CAN BE AN IMPORTANT TOOL IN ENDING
THE TRAGIC EXPLOITATION OF THESE BREEDS"

The following are Ingrid Newkirk's own words:
"People have no idea that at many animal shelters across the country, any "pit bull" who comes through the front door goes out the back door -- in a body bag...This news shocks and outrages the compassionate dog-lover. ..Here's another shocker: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the very people who are trying to get you to denounce the killing of chickens for the table, foxes for fur, or frogs for dissection, supports the pit bull policy..."
Those who argue against the euthanasia policy for pit bull dogs are naive.
I have scars on my leg and arm from my own encounter with a pit. Many are loving and will kiss on sight, but many are unpredictable.
People who genuinely care about dogs won't be affected by a ban on pits. They can go to the shelter and save one of the countless other breeds and lovable mutts sitting on death row through no fault of their own.
We can only stop killing pits if we stop creating new ones. Legislators, please take note.
* PETA supports breed specific legislation.
* Not just for pit bulls, but for ANY breed. They specifically mention Rottweilers, Dobermans and other "guardian" breeds. They see it as a first step to banning the ownership of any pet animal.
* PETA lawyers work hard to bring breed specific legislation to jurisdictions, as well as supporting the wholesale killing of all bull breed or animals which happen to share bull breed characteristics in "shelters".

kittens and dumping them in a dumpster.
ugh, PETA are scum in my book - their entire organization. if they're scum for some of these things, they're scum to a further extent because people who consider themselves "animal lovers" and pet owners (myself included at one stage) often support them without knowing the full extent of their activities.
my wife watched that one skinning video that's been going around the internet lately, and was justifiably mortified - i told her she's better off supporting some group like WSPA or whatever, rather than the cranks at PETA. btw in case i am again naieve about an animal welfare organization, comments about WSPA and SPCA - the two groups i try to support when i can - are definitely welcomed.
What's the history of PETA anyway? Have they always been terrorists? It seems that they used to have a good reputation. Am I just imagining that? Then I remember hearing that they started throwing paint on fur coats and then it progressed into totally warfare. Does anyone remember if these people were always nuts?
In my opinion, they do a marvellous PR campaign, but look beneath the surface & you'll see what they're really like. They started in the 80's & have pretty much always been extremists: remember the people breaking into research labs in the 80's & 90's? As well as the fur thing which you mentioned. PETA's also directly linked with ALF, the Animal Liberation Front, which is a terrorist organization. They belive that "animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment" so no animal/human interaction at all basically...
I did a paper on them about a month ago for one of my college classes. Look at what one of the Australian wool growers associations has to say about them: http://www.woolisbest.com/ They're so extreme thay'd rather see sheep suffer than be used for wool production. Plus there's some VERY interresting links, especially on their finances & all the animals thay've euthanized over the years
Anyway, this is getting too long already (not to mention I'm getting angry)
Good posts all here - and I agree with all of them. Years ago I wrote an article on ALF and Mink Farmers - it was about how to protect a Mink Farm from ALF.
