Number one question is why is the pup on your bed? Number two question is why do you allow this?
One of the common things dogs do when owners are away from home and dog is left unsupervised is to DIG on the owners bed. The reason being is the bed is somewhere we spend lots of time, it has a lot of scent and the dog is usually displaying some type of anxiety. about the owner's absence.
What you are describing is not what I would call "nesting" behavior I see in dogs that are arranging their sleeping area.
If you are present and witnessing this, please stop it! It can become neurotic, obsessive compulsive behavior.
Sounds to me like your puppy needs more structured positive HEALTHY playtime, wear him out doing a healthy activity instead. (i.e. swimming, retrieving, going for age appropriate walks, obedience training , tracking, agility, etc..)

ditto what cindy said.
my dog did the exact same behavior--except in his case he did it in creek beds with raging streams roiling around him. he was digging at the moving water, and then he got into trying to dig every rock out of the stream. we thought it was hilarious, but then realized it was becoming obsessive behavior and put a stop to it.
he also will dig at the grass like you describe when we are out camping and he wants to go to bed. it's his way of letting us know he would like his "pup tent" and pad put down, please. then he goes in there and goes to sleep.

My male does the digging, circling, digging, circling and PLOP down routine before he goes to bed, and if he wakes up in the middle of the night (alerting, to say your 20 year old trying to sneak in at 2:30 am). He does this in his own bed however...not mine. I just think he is trying to get comfortable.

But the way its being described isn't like normal circling and arranging that some dogs do before they lie down. My dog circles, does a couple of scratches with one paw, circles the other way does a couple scratches with the other paw etc, but its very calm.
I am picturing the pup digging at the bed the same way he would if he was digging a hole in the backyard.
If thats the case, the dog is looking for an outlet for something thats missing...he may be bored, not being exercised enough etc etc.
What type of pup is it, i am not sure the op said that?

Obsessive behavior is a lot easier to turn off with structured exercise if it's nipped fast.

I guess I don't mind when my dog is on my bed or furniture, I'm always right there beside him and haven't really found it to be a problem.
He's a cockapoo, and he's about 5 months old so we're around him all the time. He probably could be needing more exercise...we do retrieiving every night, obedience a few times a week, and some runs around the yard but I could probably be incorporating more. Thanks for the input on his digging actions.
