I can also vouch for the humaneness of a prong collar. I got one after my little(15 lbs., no where close to as big as your dog) started pulling real bad. Under bad distraction, I couldn't bring myself to correct him as hard as I needed to on a flat collar, but the prong only takes a flick of the wrist if even that with my dog. The self-corrections that your dog will give itself when he pulls will also keep the blame off you Like Ed says in his articles, "power steering for dogs"
I used a prong collar on my malinois puppy BUT I turned all the prongs around so that they were pointing out except for three evenly spaced, one in the centre and one on each side. As you already said, a strong correction was not necessary, in fact I did try a training collar first (choker) and I had to over correct her to get a response but then she practically cowered; would recover and hit the end again...then the prong collar as described above worked right away without making her sensitive to correction.

I was wondering about when your puppy just stops and won't budge? I usually have something to motivate him;like my car keys, but for reason sometimes he just stops and won't go with me at all. Even if we just walk out the door at times.
John, try pulsing the leash when it get taut (quick squeezes with your hand), while continuing to walk, even a slow walk, but keep walking. You shouldn't stop when the pup stops, pulse the leash instead and keep walking. When he follows, praise him and act happy.
Nikki, try also pulsing the leash combined with the 180 degree turns (since he's trying to lead, you want to change direction). My very strong GSD pup has responded to the pulsing and changing direction very well. When he finally does come along side me, I praise him and act all happy. By acting happy I mean I open my eyes real wide and smile while praising. For my dog, this praise was particularly important. He didn't "learn" (he became bored) until I let loose the praise.
