Well, honestly, the second the vet confirmed the ear infection, my thought went to food allergies. However, I have been so happy with her food, I can'tbear to think she is allergic to something in it that is just showing up now!
My show line male is allergic to everything and since I spent the money to have his blood tested( almost $300) and swithced his food to one with none of the offending ingredients, HE hasn't ever had an ear infection.
I'm going to hold out hope that perhaps she just got water in her ears and that was the cause of the yeast overgrowth, but I will talk to my regular vet anyway. Perhaps I'll do the allery panel just for the heck of it...

Jeanette - Royal Canin Large Breed Puppy and their GSD formula both contain yeast. I'd try a food with no yeast, and I also used a supplement called Yeast Cleanse by Solaray. I had a dog that my vet said would never get over chronic yeast issues, and have had a couple in my rescue. Eliminating yeast in their diet and in all treats etc has done wonders for all of them.

Very interesting Laureen! I'm going to go and read the label again!LOL
I will pick up the supplement tomorrow if I can..would they sell it at a health food store? Or is it specific for canine use?
Is it unusual for a dog to react to yeast?
She is such a perfect little lady and I love her so much, I hate to think that she is uncomfortable! I am so glad that this thread coincided with her infection so I can take some proactive steps to prevent a reinfection, instead of just relying on meds to treat....
Thanks so much everyone!

I've had quite a few of my rescues with yeast issues, and I have also known alot of GSD owners who had the same problem. The Yeast Cleanse is a human supplement, I bought it at a store called Nutrition House, if you google it you will see it online for sale.
Uuuhhhh. . .the vet saw the ears. . . said they were clean inside. . .and didn't mention anything about the build-up being a yeast infection or anything else?

Well,VC, not sure if you were asking me or someone else, but....in case you were addressing me, I'll respond.
The vet who saw her on a urgent basis was not one of the regular vets that I see. She is a new grad who looked so young I think she could pass for my daughter's age!(19)
Now, she looked in the ears, and they had alot of dirt from the outside kennel( Livia loves to dig out there!and I never did get the pea gravel)in there. She swabbed them and wiped a slide and off went the tech. She cleaned out the ears w./ an otic solution and said they didn't look too bad inside. On the outside they really didn't look too bad either, just a little dusty and dirty from floor dirt.
The main reason I brougth her in to be seen was because I noticed that she would shake her head alot when I would take her out, and she just looked like they were not right to me....
ANyway, the vet said the slide showed that she had an infection that was yeasty, so she gave me an otic cleanser and a bottle of Otomax to use 2x a day for 7-10 days.
Now, since seeing this thread, I called and asked to speak to my regular vet about the issues discussed here and she will be getting bak to me tomorrow in the am. ( she was away, but left me a message she'd try me back again).
So, I'll see what she says, and then let you know
