Does anyone know of any good links or books that explain what exactly your dog has to do in an obedience trial? I don't have the benefit of a mentor, and I haven't been able to find any information about what my dog needs to know before I get into the ring. It'll be CKC trials, I'm not sure if they're different from AKC, but just so you know.
I've only ever done competition in conformation, and I'm waiting for an obedience trial within a reasonable distance to go check it out...but in the mean time I'd really like to start working with my dog...but I don't know what to work on.
Heather,
Not real sure this will be of any help, but the AKC information can be found at: http://www.akc.org
That may be a starting place for you. I have attempted to look up the CKC with no luck so maybe the AKC site will parrel the CKC.
Jay
Thanks for the link. I checked the CKC website, there wasn't much. I did find a different link that just listed the points or whatever, and here's what it had for novice:
Heel on Leash 35pts
(Figure 8 is included)
Stand for Examination 30
(done on 6 ft leash-
leash is not to touch ground)
Heel Free 45
Recall 30
Long Sit (1 min) 30
Long Down (3 min) 30
----
200 max. pts.
I assume "heel free" means off leash? This is good! All I need to work on is heel on leash (believe it or not she does better off leash) and the stand for examination! She knows stand, but I've never had someone go over her while she's doing a stand.
Heather, you can download the Rules & Regulations guides, they have more details about the exercises.
Go to this page: http://www.akc.org/rules/index.cfm
and click on the link that says "Obedience Regulations." It is a PDF file that you can save to your computer. I think you can also order it as a booklet (I got one from my trainer in a seminar).
The second more helpful link on their site is "events and awards" search (http://www.akc.org/events/search/) to find shows in your area.
I think it is also helpful to take a group class that is specifically geared towards the CD title, if you can find one.
My only concern with looking at the rules on the AKC page is that they may be different from the CKC rules and regulations. Do you happen to know if they're the same?
