Marley is an 11 month old choc lab mix, adopted 8/06. We use the prong collar, & follow the basic obedience video. Invisible fence was installed approx 7 weeks ago.
I read a comment that dogs dig because they are bored. Marley is walked off property for at least 20 minutes 3 times per day. He runs daily. He receives a lot of attention. If left alone outside for 5 minutes, there's a new hole in the yard.
Suggestions?
Your dog is still a pup & they do all kinds of silly things to ammuse themselves. My 3 yr old female is anything but bored & she still digs in the yard. She loves to dig up rocks & toss & roll them around the yard for fun....no matter how much WORK she gets each day. If I fill in or coverup one hole she just digs another. So I have just decided to leave the one hole & let her get rocks out of there...at least that one is under a tree so it's not as visible in the yard. She has done this since she was a pup.
Love when people have a problem with such an easy fix.
Just don't let the pup in the yard unattended. Boredom can cause digging. And digging can be fun!
You can 100% stop this behavior NOW by just going out in the yard each and every time with your pup. Chances are when your puppy is older, and you have then broken this habit by 'management' it may not start up again.
BTW, three 20 minute walks (especially if on leash) would never have tired out my young dogs. I needed vast amounts of OFF leash exercise. Socialization events. Car rides. Training classes. Chuckit. Playing with other dogs. Hikes in the woods (off leash this was the best way). Both MENTAL and physical exercise were needed to really tire my pups and take that edge off.
