I have recently become the owner of an eight-month-old female Lab. Her name is Sadie. I am a Police Officer here in Texas and I received Sadie from the father of a young boy (a friend) who had recently died of a terminal illness. Without going into too much detail, it was the boys wish that the dog be trained to do narcotics detection work. The youngster was fascinated by police work, especially the narcotics dogs he had seen on television. I promised the boy that if he couldn’t train the dog himself… well… I now have the dog. I have never trained a dog before but have always wanted to. I have purchased the tapes on Basic Dog Obedience, Drive & Focus, Training Narcotics Detection Dogs and How to Raise a Working Puppy. From what I have learned, and from talking with some K-9 Officers, this dog lacks the drive it is going to take to do detection work. She is energetic and loves to play, but not with any toy. I have tried a ball, a ball on a string, a Kong, a rolled up towel… nothing seems to spark her interest. I really don’t want to give up on her just yet, but I realize that she may end up being just a sweet loveable companion (and if that is the case, well, that’s OK too). So my question is this: Is there anything else I can try to get Sadie moving in the right direction? I would appreciate any advice anyone can offer.
Perhaps if you put this post under the "Forums", scroll down to "Police K9" forum, scroll down to "Narcotics Training" (click on that), and maybe re-title your post to say Possible Dog for Detection?, or something like that. You'll probably get the attention of the cops on here that do that sort of thing. Hope this helps.

I agree this is the best way to get answers for your questions here.
Hiya Ray. I know you're joking and don't want to offend you at all, but also don't want anyone to think I believe cops are misguided, cause I don't Quite the contrary.
