I think its pretty crappy you have to get a working line GSD to get a decent pet.
I think its pretty crappy that we have to be having this Show-line vs Working-line conversation at all. It's not crappy that you have to go to a working-line GSD to get a good pet, the working-line should basically be the only-line per the breed's founder and original users. People who want to perpetuate a line of 'pet' dogs should pick one of the hundreds of other breeds out there that have only persisted as pets and companions. There are relatively few 'working' breeds left, and often even fewer individuals within those breeds capable of the work for which they were intended. If you cannot appreciate a breed for what it is in it's truest form, then you don't appreciate the breed and should not own one, and certainly should not breed them. JMO.
I'll get down off my soapbox now.
I agree wholeheartedly with what John just said. People that want pets should pick another breed and stop screwing up the few good working breeds that are left !!! It is hard enough to find a REALLY good working dog, now, as it is without continuing to muddy the waters further.
well...guess that puts things into perspective doesn't it? LOL! I hope that in my quest to understand this crazy world of dogs that I don't offend anyone with my questions or my frustration or my lack of intelligence. Still, the questions have to be asked. How else am I ever going to learn? You were all newbies once too right? The worst thing that can happen is that I will be able to learn from others mistakes, right? I do appreciate all the replies, thanks guys.
Excuse me cousin, I was trying to emphasize the fact that there isn't enough controls on the breeding, any putz with some akc numbers can breed, I was also trying to make the point that to get a REAL GSD you need to go to working lines. I have two dogs from Sch and Police lines but because there isnt enough hours in a day so I won't be competing with them. Just doing training at the park and at the club. I have no intention of breeding at this time. Again the only lines I've seen capable to do what I want to do and with good health are the Czech and DDR lines.
Thanks will!
I have to quickly say that my showline Schutz male was pretty good in the sport too and I used to think how hard he was in the bite work, when I talk to my club members ( good friends for over 6 years) we all laugh about me thinking how hard I thought my showline was and the way I bragged about that dog ...oh they laught at me for that I tell ya, they'll never let me down for those comments I used to make about that dog
