Where in AZ are you? Aside from my initial advice of having someone in the area point you to some good clubs, I would recommend auditing a Michael Ellis seminar that will be happening in Tucson in February:
Michael is an awesome trainer and you will see a wide variance in the dogs he is working. At the Ellis seminars that I have attended we have had everything from puppies to national competitors fine tuning attend the seminar with their dogs. If you are interested in competing in SchH, I can't recommend Michael enough. Wish I lived closer to him!

you don't have to wait to have your puppy to go watch Schutzund members train, we always at our club, encourage people to come and watch so that they can see what foundation means.Period. We had a couple that came for a year before they bought their first pup to do Schutzhund.I always tell people come and watch before you say you even want to do Schutzhund and I can't tell you how many poeple don't come back.It is a huge commitment and lots of dedication.I suggest you go and watch for a while at least until you have your pup.And of course after you have him too but at least by the time you do have your pup , you might be a little more prepared just by having come out to the club early.
Robbin,
if you have a chance to go see Ellis - GO!!!
Also, I would strongly encourage you to check out local AKC Obedience clubs. Their classes can range from bad to good, depending on the instructor ( and that statement applies to any type of Dog Training, of course! )
Robin,
Hi, I am in Arizona and I think I know what club you visited. If it is the one I am thinking of, you are right to be underwhelmed. Can you PM me and let me know? The Ellis seminar is a private one and I think it is full. I might be able to get you into it or I can at least get you in contact with my helper, who is hosting it. One of the best things I did when I got my puppy was attend one of Mike's seminars.
Michele
I went to the east valley one. They met at J.O. Combs school. Vivian is the name of the pres I think..?? I would love to see the seminar. For someone as green as I am about this i think it would be an awesome way to get started on the right foot! I am in Queen Creek, Arizona. Are you going to the seminar? Maybe we could go together! That would be so awesome!
I purchased the video 8 wks to 8 months...waiting....going to check out the pups the first of next week. Need to chose between two. ~sigh~ time is getting close and i am getting nervous. Wondering how existing dogs are going to handle new addition..
