We have an 11 week old GSD that we have started feeding raw meat. This is a first for us as it is for the dog. She loves the chicken wings but just chews it, never really breaking it down to sizes that are easy to swallow.
I started cutting the wings in thirds but she still just chews never swallowing. If I will hold part of the wing she will then rip it apart.
Will she get the hang of it? Any thoughts, tips or suggestions?
We are in the same boat, Ron. I have been feeding raw for a while now but mostly hamburger, ground turkey, beef/chicken hearts and livers. Nothing majorly difficult. Recently I switched to chicken wings and although my male has no difficulty in chewing his, my female has taken some time to adjust. She used to just lick them and growl when my male got close. It drove me nuts because she wouldn't eat then would get all territorial. My male couldn't even go outside w/o her having an attitude. So I started picking them up like Ed says after 15 minutes. Within two days she got the message and started to assert herself a little more. Now she chews them up just fine but still is very gingerly about it. What can I say? She eats like a lady. With a puppy I would guess it might take some time too. I hear people talking about teething alot. I'm not sure when that starts or if it bothers them but hopefully some more experienced folk will give some more concrete advice. Good luck!
Rob,
Your pup will get the hang of it soon, allow her to learn on her own.If you help her everytime she'll never learn to break it down herself. She is doing fine, you'll see overnight she'll change the way she eats her wings.
Hi Ron. I would continue just feeing the RMB's. One of our females took a bit of time to adapt to the difference when we switched her to raw. We didn't grind it all up for her - what we did do was cut the RMB's into "bit sized pieces" for a few days. She got the hang very quickly, and now devours the same parts we feed everyone else.
Robbin, especially since you are strongly considering adding a dog to your pack, I recommend you start feeding your dogs in crates - or some other totally separated way. You can absolutely avoid food fights this way. To my way of thinking, there are enough issues to deal with among multiple dogs - I will avoid those things that are EASY to avoid (like food fights).
Thanks for the input guys. I did end up cutting the wings up in fourths and it hasn't been a problem for the last 2 days. Anka is eating the chicken very well and doing ok on her vegies.
The breeder was feeding a kibble and we used some of my wifes yorkies Iams to hold her for a couple days till I figured out how I wanted to feed.
When we would go out she would have a bowel movement, this was 4 or 5 times a day and it would be a good bit. She has only went once today and it was hardly anything. Her water intake has gone way down also. She does have water available all the time.
This morning when the Iams was put out for the cats, I mean yorkies, Anka went and sniffed it, then turned her nose up. I am surprised to see a difference in only a few days.
Ron,
I totally understand .When we got our male 2 1/2 years ago he was one years old.He was fed (i'm convinced) cheap Kibbles and was sooo thin, but the worse is that he had the runs all the time and a cow pile of it ,4 to 5 times a day!! I switched him to raw after having him a month, I did not want to switch right away so that I could see how he was health wise with out any drastic changes in his diet until he was used to his surrounding ect....Long story short. When I switched him to raw he never again had the runs (unless I use to much raw eggs) but he is so much healthier all around.I had heard that he had never had(before he came to me) a normal bowel until he came to me.What raw diet means to me and many is a healthier dog for sure.
