How freakin' adorable was that story . Leerburg should hold contests. One could be to have all of us write something about our childhood and the event that profoundly affected us regarding dogs. Or another could be that we wanted a dog so badly when we were young we did XYZ...I think you'd have a great shot at winning Carol!
They get dumped at my driveway quite frequently. It always breaks my heart to have to take them to the Humane Society but, there is no way I can keep them all. They are always in terrible shape and I don't want to expose my dogs to what they could possibly carry. One was covered in mange. The cats that I have now were all drop offs.
The cruelty of human beings is absolutely incredible.
My wife and I have rescued dozens. Never kept a single one. Most times we were able to find the original owners, or we would adopt them out to new owners. Very few were taken to AC.
My job puts me in contact with alot of strays. I'm sorta the snake, alligator, possum, coon, dead deer and anything else wild, officer. I did rescue a 4 week old kitten from some bums under the interstate about 6 years ago. Still got that critter.
The Humane Society here in Phoenix charges $20 when you bring in a stray - for them there's no way to prove it's a stray and you aren't the owner just dropping off your unwanted dog. So they charge. They'll only come pick it up for no charge if the dog is hurt or looks abused.
Although I've been able to find the owners on a couple of them, the times I've taken in strays in the last few years, because of my previous dog having to be an only dog, they were driven to the Humane Society with much heartbreak on my part. I'll never forget them, each face is imprinted on my heart. I pray for each of them.
I rescued a stray when I was 10. It had this huge gash on its side, I found it when I was out walking Digger and he tried to chase after the dog. So I took Digger home and went back to look for the dog, who was sitting in someone's backyard. I sat there for about 45 minutes getting closer and closer...I managed to loop the leash around it and slide the end through the loop so it was like a slip collar...
Anyway, it tried to bite me at one point but once it was on the leash everything was fine - it even walked nicely on the leash. My mom drove us up to the humane society and we dropped it off. I called every day until the dog was adopted.
That was the last time, though. I don't really see strays anymore...except a few years ago I was in a restaurant and saw one creeping up behind a man and his toddler, looking VERY hungry. I wanted to yell to them but they couldn't hear me, anyway, they stepped inside just in time. Someone called animal control.
