Hi All,
My dog appears to have partially torn a toenail on her front paw. She was in the yard chasing squirrels, came in and I noticed she was licking her foot. Upon closer inspection I saw there was blood, and the nail is bent outward at an unnatural angle. It is the outer most toe on her front foot. It looks damaged at the base. I called my vet, applied styptic powder, and she will be seen in the morning
Does anyone have any past experience with this sort of injury.
I'm giving her some homeopathic remedies right now...Arnica for injury/pain....Rescue Remedy to just soothe her...she is NOT good at the vet.......ugh!!!

Those damn squirrels…
Yep they got both of my dogs ant one time or another. One had to have surgery the nail was so badly torn, the other was torn but I was able to band-aid it on (she is good with not licking band-aid’s) and after a week or so she was better.
I wish you the best.

Ouch...Torn toe nails hurt!
Sometimes minor surgery is called for but other times the vet can trim and tape it up. On the offchance that some kind of sedation will be necessary to fix the problem you should pick up all food and water by 10:00 pm tonight, just in case.
Have had something like that happen a few times, each time we took the dog to the vet so the damaged part of the nail could be removed. We would have the vet numb the foot first and the dog was usually fine within a couple of days.
One of my dogs had caught his nail on the carpet and pulled the nail completely off, very painful to even look at. The vet was able to cut the quick back to the base and he also was fine within a few days.
thanks guys,
I'm feeling a little better. My girl seems subdued, I think she is having some pain.
I will remove water and hold food until she sees the vet!
Although I have not had a toe nail torn off, I had one split in half by the base. I too put the septic powder on in, wrapped the paw in gauze and taped it, then put a boot on to prevent my goof from taking the bandage off. In a couple of days, the nail was fine. I swear, my dog feels no pain, ever...
One of my dogs had his toenail partially torn off at the base, and the vet ended up removing it entirely because it was painful and was likely to fall off on it's own. Once it was removed the dog was fine and seemed pain free. The nail DID grow back, but was really prone to coming off. He lost it a couple times after it grew back but it didn't seem to hurt anymore, even though it still freaked me out a little!
I'm dealing with it right now. My girl rips one or two off every winter! The first year she tore off one of her dew claws and then when it grew back she did again, in the same season. Now it is like a little mongrol claw; like a T-Rex's arms.
About two weeks ago she pulled the nail cap off one her quicks. The problem this time is that it did not come completely off on its own. It was bent straight back and still attached at the base. I took her to the vet and the vet finished it off. My girl was in a lot of pain at the time and petrified; I had to wash my pants when I got home. I'm willing to bet the vet visits will a battle from here on out. She is still not yet herself though.
I was able to get a better look at the damage this morning. She broke the nail about in half, it was partially attached and sticking out at an unnatural angle. She is never good at the vet. Is a shelter rescue....can act like a wild animal...a bit of an exaggeration but you get my drift. We muzzled her, and the vet was able to snip it down. I'm soaking it for 5-10min in water with some antibacterial soap for about 5 days. The vet does not think we need to be concerned about infection at this time.
Over all she was a good girl. It was me that could have used a tranquilizer when it was all done
My two older dogs have had torn nails on more then one occasion.
I guess I was lucky and they never got infected so no vet visit for me. Sometimes lots of blood but they still ran after the ball. My male rips his dew claw every winter if it doesn't fall off he will chew it off.
Those who would give up essential freedoms for the temporary feeling of safety deserve neither!!
