I do consider them a small dog.
If I went somewhere and said I was looking for a large dog & someone suggested a Bassett I would think they were crazy because to me they are not a large dog.
Other people may think differently, to each their own.
When I think of a large dog,I think of height.
To the original poster:
How about going to the shelter and possibly adopting a dog from there? Nothing wrong with a little mixed breed dog.
I grew up with Dachshunds as a kid (the big "old fashion" kind of Standards) and they were really super dogs -- Ours were not yappers at all, but they did have a very "big dog" BARK because of their deep chests, plus they were quite protective of me & our property...
My Dachshund mix didn't have any back problems and she did have the length of a Dachshund's back, pretty much. I remember teaching her to sit - LOL - I couldn't always tell if she was sitting or not, I had to really look! What a riot
I did some research for some good therapy dogs (I work for an organization for people with disabilites where people are wanting small dogs). I came across the Mi Ki. It is not a registered breed with AKC or CKC but it is with other organizations. Seems to have taken the 'best' of 3 different breeds to make a very nice dog. I personally like the papilon http://www.littlemi-kis.com/history.htm so was partial I suppose to the Mi Ki.
I had a Toy Terrier for 14 years when I was growing up. He was a wonderful companion, smart, easy to house train, and my best friend from the 7th grade until I was in my early 20's.A very loyal and loving dog.
