Herm sprenger has a quick release prong that is a lot easier to put on a dogs neck but should be coupled to another collar in case it pops off (same with any prong though). I had a petco prong collar that imbedded itself in my pups neck so I switched to herm sprenger collars only now.

To keep in mind for the prong collar; make sure to put it on right if using at a young age. There is a link here on Ed's page but I can't find it. I am by no means an expert here at all, but I remember reading mroe than one article or reference material that all have stated to put the collar up on the neck and not down low because of nerves and tissue damage? I'm sure U can find it on the site here, bunch of pictures to fit the collar correctly...
Thanks Kim and Adam,
I have Ed's DVD on Your Puppy 8 wks to 8 mos & also the Basic Dog Obedience DVD which shows how to fit the prong collar - I will look at it again before I attempt to put it on Nickie this weekend (when I have more time). When I first started teaching him to walk on the leash (around Christmas) (other than in the house or in the back yard), it took about a week to get him from the front door out to the front sidewalk (he was so scared of everything or maybe just cautious??). Just a car passing by would cause him to try and bolt & run back toward the house. This morning I was able to walk him a total of about 4 blocks (one-half block was on the sidewalk next to a busy street). I give him lots of praise but also lots of "slow", etc. like on the DVD.

Diane...
Get the Herm Sprenger quick-release prong.
I have the HS "standard" prong and somehow got my finger trapped in the link and between my dog's neck (I have NO idea how I accomplished that!) while I was tring to unlink it to take it off. He was squirming around and I'm very lucky I didn't break my finger. It was not my most coordinated moment
Adam is correct about fitting it properly and I'm finding with my pup that he is between links right now. Remove one and it's gagging him...add it back to the collar and it's slipping down slightly. He needs to grow just a bit to get it fitting right again.
