I've noticed where several of you only apply Frontline every 4-6 months. I've been doing it every month like the directions indicate. Am I overdoing it? Now that winter is approaching do I still need to maintain a regular schedule with the Frontline or can I back off a bit? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for the reply, Nancy. Have any of you dog owners heard of dogs having an allergic reaction to either Frontline or Advantage? I'm wondering if my dog's itching problems might stem from Frontline use.
That is always a possibility. How near is your dog to the weight extreems listed on the packages. For example if your dog weighs 60Lbs and the package you are using is for dogs 60-90lbs your dog is probably getting more than it needs. You could do the math and only give the dog the exact amount it needs for its weight. That might help if your dog is having allergic issues.
You were wondering if anyone's GSD has been allergic to Frontline. The answer is yes. Our pup was allergic from the first time we used it. The info. from our vet indicated that adverse reactions can occur, such as itching, irritated skin, and even loose stools and vomiting. Read the literature that comes with the package and it will confirm this. Good luck.
So, Linda, what did you do? I'm assuming you stopped using Frontline? Did you use another flea control product? Actually, what I think my dog's problem is is a yeast infection. Do any of you readers have any suggestions as to how to get rid of a yeast infection? I feed my dog no grains. I'm totally opposed to antibioitics and steroid medications.
Hello Butch. What we decided to do was to quit using frontline entirely. We live in the panhandle of Northern Idaho and due to our cold winters, fleas aren't a huge problem. Ticks, however, are another story. We don't use any chemicals to control ticks or fleas. We check our dog regularly to any signs of fleas (nothing thus far and we don't expect to have any). We pull lots of deer ticks in the spring and early summer. We are lucky in that our ticks disappear when the summer rolls around (much to hot for them here).
Our previous dog was never given Frontline or any other chemical control. He did pick up fleas from the vets one time. We utilized a product that is sprayed around the edges of the carpets (baseboards) that inhibited the fleas from reproducing. After two months the problem was solved. Your vet will know the product name--essentially, it kills adult fleas and doesn't allow hatchlings to mature to the mating stage. Thus, end of flea problem (unless your dog keeps getting exposed). You should change bedding daily if your dog lives inside. If he has an outdoor kennel, you can spray the area and keep him out of it for a couple of days. Then he can be reintroduced to the environment. If you live in an area with a huge flea problem, I'm not sure I can help. I've heard from some friends that a few "natural" products made from citrus oil can do a pretty good job. I've never tried them and I would think that citrus oil could be quite irritating. Tough problem, and I wish you the best.
