I have been thinking about this for some time, what about a DVD that would go in detail on how to buy a german shepard or any dog for that matter. I think this would be as valuable as some of the the other dvd’s that ED sells.
Title: “How to buy a German Shepard”
Any ideas on this title?
Benefit or not
I do not think it is as easy as some people think.
It's so hard for a novice GSD person to figure out which lines produce what kind of dogs. And then to know how to evaluate the litter's parents and the puppies themselves.
Obviously an experienced and trustworthy breeder should be able to match a buyer with an appropriate puppy, but then again how many breeders are willing to admit their dogs' faults and suggest another breeder to a potential client?
I don't know how much info Ed can cram into a DVD, but I would certainly be interested... buying a puppy is such a long-term commitment, it would certainly be worth the trouble of doing good initial research.
So far my preferred method of selecting a breeder is via recommendations and references from other experienced breeders and dog trainers. Maybe posting a list of good/bad breeders and dogs would be even more helpful, hehe.
Then again we wouldn't want to get Ed into trouble for going out and naming "bad" dogs and breeders and making people mad
It definitely seems like a difficult topic. Doesn't Ed say that puppies are a crapshoot and that even with all his experience he still can't always pick out a future stud dog from a litter of puppies? I guess the safest way to go if one is looking for a top competition/working prospect is to pay up the extra money and go with an older dog that's had the initial training and that's clearly showing the potential for the work.
