So I met a guy the other day who's moving to Senegal and buying a rhodesian ridgeback, which he hopes to do schutzhund with.
Do any of you guys think a hound would really be a good choice? I mean, my experience has been that they're pretty stubborn, and I don't think you'd ever really get the performance that you would from a GSD or a mal...although I guess if the sleeve was furry it might be easier to convince them to go after it...
Anyway, as a soon-to-be rhodesian ridgeback owner, I wanted to hear if anyone else has heard of a ridgeback in schutzhund. I'm not planning on trying it, I'm just curious about it because of the guy I met.

Approx 10 yrs ago there was a guy who brought his RR pup to our club & he tried with that dog for over a year before he bought a GSD. The RR never showed much interest, but that could have been just that dog & not the breed.
That's sort of the impression I got, that they wouldn't be interested. I've spent some time with ridgebacks and I just can't imagine one doing very well in schutzhund.
Besides, why would you bother if there are breeds who will be way easier? He says its because he wants a dog that'll tolerate the heat better...but I'm sure a doberman or mal could handle it as long as there was adequate water and shade (and a ridgeback would need that too I'm sure)
