since the colder weather has actually arrived here in central indiana, we've started having the fireplace going more. on the few occasions where people are downstairs, we tend to congregate around the hearth. the typical unspoken rule is that younger members of our family will give up their "prime spots" for older members.
i'm not entirely sure, but i think my dog has figured out that this might be an occasion to assert her position in our pack. she'll push in front of everyone, or crawl under people, and sit right in front of the fire. i'm pretty convinced it's not because she's cold - after a few minutes she starts whining and licking her fur where it's getting too hot, and she won't hog the other heaters in the house - just the fireplace.
i've started making her sit next to or behind me (from the fire's perspective) now as a precaution, but i'm wondering if this is actually what's going on in my dog's head?
she's stupid enough to chase her tail, but smart enough to figure out that fireplace position equals social status?
