Good article. I do agree that neglect is a form of abuse but just doesn't reach the level of extreme abuse. For example, while both are bad not grooming a dog doesn't reach the same level of abuse as setting one on fire.
But, the main point of the article that most dogs and other pets turned over to a shelter are not victims of abuse or neglect but rather victims of cirmcumstance or ignorance. I have little patience for the latter group of people because there is so much information available to assist them in the proper choice, care and training of dogs and other pets. Those that must give up a pet due to a negative change in their circumstances generally do so only as a last resort.
Hmm, I read it and thought that abuse and neglect don't have a black and white cut off point- they can run together. Intent should have some bearing though- as in the degrees of murder and manslaughter. Neglect can also slide into a dangerous situation for the pet since the neglector is too close to the situation they don't always see how bad things have gotten (speaking as a former Animal Control Officer).
And- what should be sent out to puppy owners is what is said frequently on this list; that the worst way to treat a dog is to overindulge it. That overindulgence can be deadly and untreatable. Overindulgence is abuse to the dog's psyche.
Anna, I agree with you, also I cannot stand the people who have dogs and don't find the time to feed them, neglect ,ignorance?? I think that is out right abuse, neglegance to me is not cleaning the bowls often
I honestly wish we could put the people that starve animals in jail and not feed them for the same amount of time THEY "neglected" to feed their animals.EYE for an EYE.
