I had mine done so can't help that way. I do know that you'll need some one to hold the dog and that it's not a good idea to tattoo the ear because thieves have been known to cut off a dog's ears to remove the tattoo. As far as letters and numbers you can use the dog's registration number or any numbers/letters you choose. Just make sure they're ones you'll remember or record them so you don't forget. And be sure to register the dogs with at least one of the organizations out there for the purpose.
I have two pups needing tatoos. I have the tatoo gun and ink, but have never done it. How is it decided what numbers and letters to use?
Shari Sailor
I have no idea if this particular format for the letters/numbers is standard. The breeder we got our shepherds from uses this format in case it helps you:
First two digits are the year they were born.
Next 3 letters are an abbreviation for the kennel name.
Next 1 letter is the letter designation for the litter.
Last number is the number assigned to that pup within the litter.
If the breeder does not tatoo the dog you can use any thing you want, I have chips and tatoos on my dogs. The only real thing a tatoo will do is help the judge see that the dog you are trialing is the dog you say. As always if some one wants to cheat they will and can. If you have never done a tatoo be fore be prepared. Your tatoo needs to be pushed hard and fast sp the dneedle protrude through the ear. That means some blood. Might want to think about a pole to tie to. The dog will not like the process. Then if the dog goes in the house be prepared to have green ink in the house. Best to have help by some one experienced for the first time. good luck
For individual registration (for USA or other) you can use any number/letter sequence you want. Beth's example is a good one. For USCA litter registration though, the sequence is as follows:
First letter is the region code - the region (ie Northeast = A) the litter was born in.
Second letter is the tattooer's code - designates which USCA Tattooer tattooed the litter
Third number is the year born (ie 2007 = 7)
Fourth and Fifth letters are the breeder's code (mine is DT)
Sixth letter is the "litter letter" - all puppies are named starting with this letter (ie first litter for the breeder = A, second is B etc).
Seventh number is the puppy number - puppies are named alphabetically males first then females. So male #1 is 1, male #2 is 2, female #1 is 3 etc.
So a sample tattoo for my "L" litter that is being born right now, is AR7DTL1, AR7DTL2, etc.
Thanks Molly for the USA tattoo requirements. I'm filing that bit of info away! (hopefully I won't kill the wrong brain cell in training afterglow or anything like that...)
