i was wondering if i can have my pup tattooed by someone else, do vets do this, or where would i have to have this done? i know that you can buy the equipment but i only have one dog to tattoo. also how do i decide what the tattoo should be, numbers and letters, and how do i pick a number that is unique so if i am able to do SchH/OFA later, it wont be confused with any other dog? thanks for the help.

Hi Travis, in Canada we are issued a tattoo series that is assigned to us by the Canadian Kennel Club. Our letter combination is 4JA, then we add to that the number of the pup, for instance first born pup of the year would be 4JA1, then we add the letter of the year, as assigned by the CKC. (Not sure what it is yet this year!) So, my 8 month old Dobe Cutter (last May) is 4JA3P, we have our vet tattoo on the Left Flank, so his tattoo is registered with the CKC as 4JA3P LF.
A common misconception is that all dogs with tattoos are purebred! This is not the case! Many vet clinics will tattoo any cat or dog while it's being spayed/neutered with their own registered "clinic code". It helps with locating lost pets. I believe all the animal shelters in Canada also tattoo with a SPCA tattoo series.
If your dog is purebred, check with your breeder to see if they are assigned a tattoo series and what sequence you may use. If it's not a purebred, try contacting your vet clinic to see if they have a series they use. I think it's even permissible to tattoo your own personal ID number, such as part of your SSN?? I'm really not sure on that. You could contact your Schutzhund organization, and OFA for their input!
Hope this helps! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
