Ok I will be the first to admit I know NOTHING about competition sport dogs. I have a male GSD that will be 6 in April. He is a working Police K9 and is fantastic at his job, and we will never compete for sport. When he was purchased he came with "titled" papers. These really mean nothing to me or my Police Service, we just want him to work (and he does) I am now curious to what it all means
He came from the Netherlands and his exam book is VDH. the papers show VHIII. Just curious to know what this means.
Of course we all laugh here, because how can we tell that these papers are really his. That is why we care more about how he works than how he looks on paper. His scores look quite high at testing; 273 on VH, 280 VHII, and 271 VHIII, I know they are tested on basic tracking, obedience and what I call apprehension.
But can someone tell me in lamens terms what it all means
In another thread someone said the VH is a Dutch Schutzhund title basically. If that is accurate, then the title consists of:
Tracking, 100 points.
Obedience, off leash, 100 points.
Protection, off leash, 100 points.
Tracking depends on the level, but the dog has to down when finding articles in the track.
Obedience requires the basic keep up with the handler thru turns and change of pace. Sit in motion, down in motion, stand in motion, recall to front position. Go from front to heel position. Retrieve a dumbell, retrieve dumbell over an obstacle and return over obstacle etc.
Protection is running blinds, the level of the title dictates how many blinds. Level 3 the dog has to circle 7 blinds, look inside each blind for the helper, then when the dog finds the helper he has to do a bark & hold in front of the helper. The dog has to attack a fleeing suspect, do a transport of the decoy around the field and bite on a surprise-attack and bite at a decoy running at the dog and hold on during stick hits.
I guarantee I've missed a bunch, but that's basic rundown of what a dog needs to do for the title... assuming the other poster was correct in saying that the VH is basically Schutzhund in Holland, which from a quick google search I think is accurate.
