I just recently bought a new puppy and I have to leave him crated while I'm at work. He is crated for about 8 hours with a 20 minute break for lunch and play and going outside. This only happens approximately two times a week. Is this an okay amount of time to have puppy in the crate?
Puppies sleep alot so I think it is ok.Does he or she get attention after you get home? How old is your puppy? I think rule of thumb is about one hour per month old is ok for being in the crate. Main concern is puppy being able to relieve its self.
First of all, congrats on your new pup! It sounds like it's fine, as long as your pup is getting out mid-point to releive himself and get a little playtime. Young puppies sleep a LOT anyway. What makes it okay is the break; eight hours without it would be too long for a pup to hold it but it sounds like you already know that. How does he seem to handle it? Is he staying clean?
He is only 3 months. He hasn't been able to hold it yet. He won't poop in his crate but he will pee. He does fine in his crate at night though. He never has an accident. Only during the day while I'm at work. I guess I can't really do anything about that though.

Hey Jeremy,
You said in your post:
"This only happens approzimately 2 times a week"
What schedule only happens 2 times a week?
Is it that 5 days a week he's in the crate for 8 hours without a break or is it only 2 days a week that he's in there for 8 hrs??
Sorry...let me clarify. My partner is on a schedule that always moves around and I always work from 7:30 - 4:30. Two days a week, my partner also works 7-5. On those two days the puppy is in the crate for 8 hours. Although he is in the crate, I can come home for lunch to let him out, feed, and play with him.

Ok, thats what I thought but I just wanted to clarify.
I agree with what others have said...a couple days a week shouldn't be too tough on him. And him going pee in the crate when he does have to be in there for 8 hrs is just something you will have to put up with for now, considering his age. 8 hrs is too long for him to try and hold it all day.
Now, I've never crate trained a puppy that young, but my concern would be that he may get into the habit of peeing in the crate. Not that you can do anything now, because you can't expect him to hold it for 8 hrs.
Does anyone who has had experience crate training a 3 month old pup think it may become a problem if he's allowed to pee in the crate?
sounds like you have no other option. How much room does he have in the crate? Keep it just enough for puppy to fit and turn around. My opinion is it will be alright. My 8 week old hasn't gone in his yet and went 10 to 3 last night before we let him out to go. Good luck and do what you can. Enjoy your puppy!
Also when you let him out for lunch I would not play as he will need to drink thus needing to go soon. Make sure you are cleaning crate and bedding good when he does go with simple solutions or natures miracle to get rid of any pee odors
