Just got my 6 month old gsd...She had a long flight but I think is settling in a little....How long usually does it take for a dog to "warm up" to you....Here is a link to her pedigree...Let me know what you guys think...
I have flown several dogs, depending on temperment it may take them a few days to totally relax. I can normally tell how long it will take for them to settle in based on whether or not they come out of their crate right off the plane. Some come out on their own right away, and others it takes a few minutes of coaxing.
When I got Remi he was 4 months old, he didn't mess his crate and he was in there for 6 hours. He came out right away, was shy, but went potty and then he went back into crate and car for another 1.5 hour ride home. He was pretty settled in about a day. My RT took a bit of coaxing to come out and he took about 2 days to settle.
I don't know how long to tell you, but, Imagine her world.
She's just been ripped from her littermates and her mother. Everything smells, sounds, and looks different. Think about the trip she's taken from her perspective and with her ability to comprehend.
This would be a great time to imprint yourself on her as the giver of warmth, food, security, and pleasure. Reassure her with your voice, it doesn't matter you say. You read her the TV guide, but do it in a soft voice.
Imagine a two and a half or three year old who's been through something similar. and you'll have an idea of how the world looks right now.
You'll know when she's settled down so long as you're aware that you can over do it and enter into a co-dependent relationship where she acts afraid and you sooth her for it.
And remember this information is free, you get what you pay for.
Interesting Question. I would wager that every pup is different and the length of time crated, length of flight, et cetera would all factor in.
Many moons ago, while my brother was in Alaska he got himself a pup. When it was time to come home, he couldn't find his paperwork so his pup had to fly home separately from him.
He was already back here in Maine by the time the pup landed in Boston (where I was in college), so I went over to get the pup. She came out of the crate fine, accepted me and my sister immediately and was a great pup that grew into a great dog.
This was a pup that was not crate trained prior to the flight as my brother and his pup lived in the various campgrounds. I don't even know if he ever leashed her. She had a great temperment.
She flew from detroit michigan to cincinatti ohio and then to little rock arkansas where I picked her up....She was a bit nervous about coming out of the crate but came out after about 30-40 seconds...We then walked her around a bit and put her back in her crate and drove her for about an hour back home. She did not make a sound..She was previously an outside dog and is getting used to being inside...She is doing pretty well so far,,,just real curious about every little thing her nose comes across..For the past two days I have had her with me just about all day..exposed her to many things...She is absolutely wonderful in her crate and will not make a sound while in it as long as someone is around her and she can see them....
What do u guys think about the pedigree...Has anybody dealt with this breeder.
Brent,
The pedigree and the breeder are 2 different things.Like I said I have Lord im my males pedigree , I have seen some very nice dogs out of Lord and some not so great but ok.It all depends on so many things , have fun with your dog ,don't be so focused on the pedigree, sometimes it means little compare to how your dog is now.You seem to like him , enjoy, get a program started and focus on that. And don't forget some picture huh.....
ok, i have had the dog for about 3 days now...spending constant amount of time with her.....She was a previous outside dog and will be staying inside now..She does really well in the crate and will not make a sound as long as she can see someone..
I have a question though....She seems to have no interest in the ball and little in the tug....She has played tug a couple of times with me but other times she just walks right past it...She is the same way with the ball...just no interest at all...She is 5 months old....Is this something i need to worry about or do u think it will come with time...The previous owner of her said that they didnt do the ball much because they didnt know what kind of family she would be going to..they used food when trying to do obedience
