Can someone tell me if chicken gizzards are considered organ or muscle? Is that a dumb question? I'm pretty sure I've seen it referred to as both in different places. Thank you for your help.
Gizzards are the stomach of the chicken where they process their grains,(i read that somewhere but don't quote me it was a while ago).I guess it would be under the organ categorie. I ahve a good book that say that in some wild dogs they leave the gizzard behing from certain prey, they don't eat it.Mine get one a day and they like them.
I just picked up the 10lbs of gizzards that I ordered through a local co-op and want to make sure I get them in the correct category.
I'm researching "green tripe" as we speak since I can't remember how to categorize that either. I'm taking the easy way out here and hoping someone responds. How do y'all feed your green tripe - ie, how many times per week, is it considered more on the vegetable side, do you feed it routinely or as a special treat?
Well I even asked my butcher what gizzards are and he said it's an organ ? SO I'll go by what Cindys said, but mine gets one a day.
As far as tripe, it is the stomach of ruminating animals.
I gave it instead of veggies, and I order the rolls. They are far better than the cans, I did the cans when I am in between ordering the fresh tripe. I get it ground.
Ever since I added the raw tripe, my oldest male would alwsy eat grass at the park , I have'nt seen him do that since I added tripe.I guess he is getting what he needed all along. That smelly Tripe..
Angelique: How often do you feed the tripe and how much? I just got 4 5 lb rolls yesterday. I haven't been feeding vegetables for about 1 month. The veggie glop I tried making when I started raw a couple months back is just too much work, mess, etc... Am I correct in assuming that the tripe can take the place of the veggies and probably only needs to be fed 2-3 times per week? What about quantity? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
cathi,
I'm sorry I just realized you had a question for me, i was looking at my post and saw your question to me.
Well as for the tripe you can feed as a 50% of your feed ratio.
I feed 25 %
Like my female gets 32 oz of rmb per day(including organs) I give her approx.10oz. a day.She loves it and it's great for puppies too, very nutritous.I hope that helps, sorry I'm late
