My 7 month old GSD has been raised in a single story home since birth. We recently purchased a new home with a large basement and my puppy is deathly afraid of the steps. She will not go down or up them for anything.
I tried making a game out of it and tried using treats but she is terrified!
Easiest thing to do is to pull them down on a leash. Are you sure the dog is afraid to go down steps in general or just those steps. If you have someplace that has a long staircase to go down outside (like a museum or large builing) in your area try that. My younger dog (15 months) refuses to go down the basement stairs in my house, but could care less about the steep 2nd or 3rd floor staircases or even the basement steps at a relatives house. Just curious if it is really going down all steps or not.
Don't know if this will help or not - my 6 month old pup has always been terrified of tile floors (which our vet has). So not only was he not wanting to go into our kitchen, but would refuse to budge when going inside the vet's office. Last weekend before his vet visit, I took along some yummy home-made (by me) beef liver treats. I fed him a few as we got out of our car and also every few seconds while we walked into the tile lobby. No problem! He walked like a pro across the floor and today when he was there again, I didn't even have to use the treats. So maybe some really really tasty treats might help in the coaxing!
