I just got my first GSD pup...he is 11mos old. I noticed this am that he has a LOT of hair in between his pads...My Yorkies get the hair clipped out...Do GSD keep the hair, or clean it out??
i'm reasonably sure you're supposed to trim it as part of grooming. i take a pair of buzzers (hair clippers), flip my dogs on the ground and clip it away every couple of months, because they seem to have better grip on hardwood floors without it. they don't mind it any more, it's like a game to them, they lay there projecting "oh no, you got me" but they didn't like it to begin with.
did you try googling "german shepherd grooming tips" or something similar? i think that's where i got the impression.
