Yuko, I totally agree with you in not feeding the canned products in a raw diet on a regular basis. I could see using the canned stuff if something isn't thawed in time or maybe for convenience if I am away from home etc. I usually feed a fish meal once a week.
While we are on the subject of fish -- what other types are people feeding in addition to salmon, mackerel and sardines?

I guess I was thinking along the lines of cleaning and de-boning before feeding.....
I will have to do some research on the freshwater fish also. Never thought about that. I am also going to see if our grocery store can order frozen sardines for me.....
I will let you know what I find out.

Giving canned fish occasionally is very common, but of course fresh is great (and expensive for many; I live on a small fishing port, but that's not the case with everyone).
Canned salmon, for example, with the skin and bones, is produced from wild salmon (a huge plus; I won't use farmed fish); the bones are cooked to softness; it's an expensive fish fresh and a cheap one canned. As we have discussed on the board many times, we don't feed raw Pacific Northwest salmon because of salmon poisoning; canned, of course, is cooked.
I do feed quite a bit of fish, including commercially-frozen raw white fillets.
I feed sardines that are packed in spring water with no added sodium (salt) a couple of times a week. Mackeral I feed only one or 2 times times a month....too much salt for my liking, even rinsed multiple times. I much prefer feeding the salt free sardines. As others stated, I also, always feed salmon oil & Vit E daily no mater what other 'meat' they are eating that day. Occasionall, if I buy some fresh fish for myself, I share some with my dogs.
