I just went and bought a prong collar at the local store, felt like I had to finally get one for this new dog. I have had him about two weeks. (Rescue, ddr lines, and 11mo male pup) my first GSD.
Thing is, we went for our first walk this afternoon and he already knows about that collar, LOL WHat a difference a prong collar makes.
And in the morning time, when I get ready to put this collar on, he is gonna fight. Thats the most important time that I need the collar for in the am, when he wants to jump and refuses to listen to me, due to being so excited to see me. That I bought the collar for more than pulling on a lead. SO my dilema. can I let the dog sleep in the collar for at least one nite, so we can work on this am jumping thing??? He is long haired, and the correction I need to give him, is in the morning for jumping all over me....I would be interested in any responses....or ideas, as he is not following commands due to being too excited....He knows who is boss, just had him two weeks though and still trying to build bond.
It may help to put it on wait 15 minutes and take it back off several times a day without taking him out. This way he doesn't think collar on means walk. Also if you can put it on before a walk and let him alone for a few minutes it may help as well.
It is not the walk....it is for correction on first thing in the am jumping....will not FOY!! That is what prong was bought for...After spening the nite elsewhere he is so happy to see me in the am, when I let him see me, he freaks and jumps everywhere, and will not FOY..That is the problem, so I thought sleeping in it one nite might help...I just came in from going and seeing him and he has the collar on, and had to stop him from jumping a few times, and he has already been for 3 walks and to the park and a round of play....Lots of energy this one...and like I said, wants to jump at inappropriate times. so I am using prong for that
Yes Mike, he is crated at nite, then once or twice I have let him sleep in house, as I believe in not releqaiting a dog just to the yard. He has good house manners also for being a dog that no one played with, or did a darn thing with him. So I have been alternating the crate thing.....Wanting him to know that he is in his forever home, and I WILL play and work with him.
I agree, his enthusiasim for me is great, and I wouldnt want it any other way...But the jumping thing, and not following the command ABOUT jumping on me is the issue I am trying to correct.
I thought maybe a day or two of grabbing that collar, and giving sharp correction for jumping might work.
AM I confusing him about his sleeping arrangements, I want him to be easily accepting of any situation that I may place him in. Also keeps his mind sharp....
Here is what I did to calm my dog down when I put the collar on him. I took out treats so he could see them. Put him in a sit and put the collar on him, then gave him the treat. I did this several times a day. Now he comes out of the crate and sits patiently while I put the collar on him and give him his treat.
He is, I used prong one time, and he does not easyily go into now. Guess I will have to take off and on several times and treat...Thanks for all the info. I will continue to make his digs stable, and work on that jumping...He seems to think it is a game now this week.
Thanks for all the info
