i was reading the prior post about vaccinossis and after being scared to death by it i am wondering what vaccinations should be given and at what age. if i remember correctly corona is pretty much a useless vaccine because they are supposed to be protected by their mother's milk till 6 weeks and are immune to the disease after 8 weeks old. please tell me if i am wrong. bordetella is not much use because it only protects against 2 strains of kennel cough and there are over a hundred strains. i have read this from a link posted on here before so i may have interpreted it wrong. but that is the way i have understood it. at what age should the first shots be given and which ones up until their yearly shot.which brand is the safest and best. it seems like there are over a hundred different combinations and it is mind boggling to try to figure which one to use. i know there is a progard 8 which one breeder in my area is giving to his pups and blowing about how great it is. the vets pretty much do the same thing with giving as many shots as possible in one visit. i have been only giving my dogs duramune max 5-cvk for the puppy shots till they are a year old and the rabies every year. now i am wondering is this to much? not enough? what should i be giving and which brand?
The best thing to do is NOT give the combination shots.. You want to give a KILLED parvo and about 4 weeks later give a distemper/measles.. I give my pups thier first Parvo at 9 weeks.. then 3-4 weeks later..give a distemper/measles.. 4 weeks later..another KILLEd Parvo.. then 4 weeks later another distemper measles.. At about a year I give a rabies.. and that is all I do.. NO more shots forever more....
Another option is to give the killed Parvo and then the Distemper 4 weeks later as Jody does, then wait 2 or 3 weeks and have titer levels checked for seroconversion (to see if the vaccine "took") If the titer levels are adequate, I wouldn't give any more except what is required by law which is Rabies and see if your state has the 3 year Rabies.
for me the risks of the vaccine aren't worth the benefits of repeating them if not necessary.
there is a very informative list I belong to called Beyond Vaccination..it's a yahoo group and there are some very knowledgable folks on there that have been rearing dogs for decades with minimal vacs or none at all in some cases.
