I consider that to be a completely individual thing.
Some dogs gnaw away quietly, scraping away at the bone. Others try to crack it open.
I probably seem obsessive about it, but my granddog fractured an important tooth on one and went through a pile of money at Tufts getting a crown. (He was young at the time, with many years ahead of him.)
So for me, I don't give them unsupervised, period, and I have rarely given them at all.
I did give them to one small breed dog I had who would work away on them in a scrapy gnaw-y way (not biting down hard on them). I haven't given them to the dogs who succeeded her.
But that's just me.

Thanks Carol & Amber!
Once or twice a week, when I'm home, is what I've been doing with True so I'm glad to know I'm doing it right.
We tried a knuckle bone once but it seemed awfully fatty and he ended up barfing it up. Fortunately, marrow doesn't seem to bother his system...I gave him buffalo marrow bones for the first time this past weekend...he was in heaven.

Connie,
Will the bones in the RMBs he gets every day do as good a job of cleaning the teeth? I've been giving the recreational bones not only to satisfy his need to gnaw on something but also to keep his new teeth clean. But I'll really kick myself if ends up breaking a tooth.

ok, got it. nothing smoked... I knew that. Hmmm, bad choice. so, if anyone took the time to look at the web site, http://www.redbarninc.com there are white knuckle bones under the natural bone category... . These are cleaned w/ no meat. what about these? I am just looking for something he can chew on b/w meals.. since they are not cooked or smoked, are these okay? I will go to the store soon and look for the soup bone. I have searched the meat counters at the store up and down and i have never seen anything like a "soup bone" are they somewhere I am not looking?
Maybe I should just phrase the question like this... Is there anything that I can get at Petsmart or Petco ( big retail chains ) that he can chew on b/w meals???Maybe this will be what should have asked in the first place.

The only places you will find RMB or recreational bones are places where they are either refridgerated or frozen. They are not sold by mail order or on a shelf as they are Raw and will go bad if not kept cold.
Ask a butcher for soup bones and if your dog has never had one I suggest you remove most of the marrow as it is very rich.

Those white bones are cooked and bleached.
Try a butcher, meat market, meat packing facility etc. Ask for raw knuckle bones, dog bones, or soup bones. Raw pork feet that are split in half down the middle and frozen make a pretty good recreational chew if you can't find the other bones. Raw pork feet and neck bones are usually available at WalMart.
If it's not refrigerated or frozen, it's not raw and it's not what you're looking for.
There is no real need for recreational bones if you can't find them. A rope bone toy does a nice job of cleaning teeth.

YES!!! Alice has said all the right things. Specially about weight bearing bones, they will break teeth. Connie and Anne are right also. You really don't need to give recreational bones and there's no real need to. A kong would be good also if you stuff it with peanut butter. Natural that is.

When I go to my butcher, he (and I) call them marrow bones. In the supermarket (mine, anyway) they are labeled as "marrow bones" as well, and they're usually waaaay less expensive than anything you'll find at PetCo or Petsmart (and way better, too). I got 3 bones today for $1.20.
