Hey everyone, just curious as to how to go by correcting this. My dog catches on pretty fast to new commands. We have been working on the down command and "bang". When working on the command she will do a down w/out me asking. When I tell her "NO", I pop her leash say "sit" and sit her up. I repeat "sit" and she does a down again or will go all the way and lay on her side and look at me as if to say "where's my treat?" It cracks me up at times, but I know she does an instant down or bang because she knows that's when she gets the treat. So should I do "sit, down"...treat? then, "sit, down, bang"...treat? "sit, down, sit"..treat? and rotate. Whats the best way to go by this? Thanks.
My suggestion would be to train a specific behavior at a time. When you "down", she should ONLY down. If she tries ANYTHING else, no treat/reward. Similarly, when she sits, JUST the sit is rewarded.
Often, folks will chain commands together in rapid, unchanging succession "Sit! Down! Stay!" Train the command you want. If you want a solid, reliable Stay, train JUST the stay. And, try training Down on it's own, from a stand or even from a walk. THAT is something that will help you realize how you may need to alter your methods. A down from a flat-out run is one of the most impressive things I've seen any dog do, and it's a potential life-saver.
Your idea about changing things up and when to give the reward is the right idea. Break it down more, however. Your dog is going for the reward, so make it easier for her to get it. *smile*

That's good advice, Jim; Ed makes this point in his DVDs...train/work on one thing at a time. I found I really had to keep MY focus on the task at hand and not overload or confuse my pup with too many commands at once. It's an easy mistake to make.
Thanks Jim! Yes, I do realize we need to train 1 thing at a time, but she has sit mastered. When we are working on down, it's like she forgets "sit". I know she knows it because when we work on recall, I put her in a sit and if I yell "sit" again, she won't move. She will only move when I yell "come". Maybe I am going too fast? I have taught her down from her being in a sit. Should I now teach her that from a stand? I don't think she knows down well enough to go from standing. I don't usually teach her everything together, but sometimes if she is in a down I will point my finger at her (like a gun), yell "bang" and she lays on her side. When I tell her sit from a down, she gets stuck at times. Maybe she doesnt know sit as well as I thought. She should though. She does well w/sit even with distractions. When is a dog ready to begin incorporating the commands it knows?
I'm just slightly confused cause I didn't get much sleep last night so if I'm not addressing the right question, forgive me
You want to know how to get your dog from a down to a sit, am I right? If she has sit mastered from a standing position, then it's another step to have her master it from a down position. Help her along by telling her down, treat her, let her see another treat in your hand, say sit and at the same time raise the treat up high enough where she can get it when she's in a sitting position. When she sits, treat and praise. Down again, sit again, etc. If she elects to stand to get the treat when you say sit, push the treat a little up and toward her to get her to sit. Do it quickly enough so she associates the sit from a down with a treat.
The same thing with teaching a down from a stand. Command down, lower the treat all the way to the ground, when she's in a full down, then treat & praise.
No Sandy, you did get it right haha. Actually you made me realize that Brandi (my dog) knows how to master the sit from a standing position. Since I am teaching her down now, she doesn't know how to sit from the down position. DUH Alex! I never thought to teach her sit from down, which I can totally agree is a whole other step. It's like getting directions to an address from both sides of town. Thanks!
