Hi, went to meat market today. Got a pretty large size femur bone for pretty cheap. There is minimal meat on the bone b/c they cut most of it off. Took it and let my GS have it. He loves it. He loves to chew chew chew on it. I can hear and see the teeth getting cleaner in front of my eyes.
He loves to knaw on the head of the bone. He has started chewing his way into the bone. He comes at it from the side of him mouth and not as if he is going to crack it open. He is just gradually wearing it down.
I just wanted to make sure this was okay. I am assuming there is marrow in the middle somewhere ... Can i wait till he knaws down so far that he gets to the marrow, or should I go cut it open to let him get to the middle.
Just was a little confused to as how much knawing should be done and how long he should work on it and far he should get into the femur.. ANy help?
He will only work on it for about 30-45 min, then I think he is tired. I usually wrap it back up and put it in the freezer until next time. There is plenty of meat on it still.

Kelly,
I would toss the bone. I only give my dogs Recreationals until they get bored with them the first time. Then I pick them up and throw them away. The leg bones I give are about 4 to 6" in length. I also scoop out some of the marrow as it is really rich and can cause, vomiting and diarrhea in dogs.
If you are going to save rec bones, I think the best way is to place them in a bowl of water and keep them in the fridge. And if I am not mistaken it is not reccommended to do this more than once.
Rec bones are very hard and become harder with outside exposure therefore increasing the risk of broken teeth.
Just my .02 cents.
