I have a 8week old puppy that I want to train for protection for the family. Should I let my kids play with her or just pet her? Kids are 12,10, and 4. all girls. The only thing I am teaching her is to come and outside for the bathroom.I have just started to make her wait in the crate till i say come. or she will just get excited and bolt out. She is doing good.
I suggest doing alot of reading on the forum and the training articles that Ed has written on the website. That would be the best place to start. Whether or not to have your daughters pet, play, interact with the dog is up to you, because it all depends on how you're going to train for protection. Dogs are naturally protective of their "pack"(your family is this dogs pack). Depending on your needs for protection then you might not need to do much besides basic and a little advanced training. If your looking for a home security type dog(that nobody pets or interacts with but you/handler, there's a lot of training and time that needs to be considered.
I would really take the time to read through the many articles Ed has written. http://leerburg.com/articles.htm
I have bought the video 8weeks to 8months that has been helping me. Do you have a protection dog? or does anyone else that is reading this have a protection dog at home around kids? Thanks Keleah
I sincerely believe that if you want a protection dog, then it should be done correctly and with the proper training in place. That way you know you have a stable dog that is in control rather than creating a time bomb by just doing a few steps.
Dogs are instinctively protective, some breeds more than others. I certainly would not want a GSD or MAL with just a few sessions of work towards being a PPD.
PPD's, Schutzhund and Patrol dogs can be fine around people with the proper training and upkeep IMHO. It is when the training is sparse or not kept up that the dog begins to "slip" so to speak. And sometimes you just have a dog that is not good around people but is fine with the handler and family members.
I think it is all in how you train, raise and treat the dog.
Just my two cents.....
