Should I gage how much I should be feeding him based on how many times he poops? Right now it's about 4-5. Does that mean I'm feeding him too much even if he finishes his food right away if I make it smaller?
He's very tiny 3 lbs maltese/shihtzu. I feed him about 1/8 in the morning and 1/4 early evening.

Lovella, the amount you're feeding sounds like a bit much to me for a 3 lb dog. My older son & family have a Maltese about 8 mos old and she gets fed twice a day, Royal Canin puppy food (a tiny kibble), at a rate of about 2 tablespoons each meal and she sometimes doesn't eat it all. She has 2 bowel movements a day.
Also, if your dog leaves any food behind, pick it up, don't leave it out.
