Levi just barely started the beginning of his 5th month. I'm noticing a little more barking to alert to strange things. Also, twice now when he didn't know who it was he sounded off and went straight towards the offender (both times it was one of my kids) as soon as he realized who it was, he started wagging and giving kisses. Still, I was impressed that he didn't just stand and bark (like my Lab)or back up in any way (like my Lab). He went right at them with no hesitation. My question is, about what age do you start to really see this trait come out full force in the GSD? I'm sure it varies with all dogs but I'm wondering if there is an average time frame in which to watch for this trait to surface. Also, we are going to be taking him to Rocky Point with us for 4 days in April. I plan on having him attached to me at all times. Any advice for disuading people from wanting to come up and pet him? Up till now, I haven't made a big deal out of that kind of thing but I think I need to start nurturing this instinct now.

If you don't want people to pet your dog, just tell them so firmly but nicely. Another alternative is to buy the Leerburg cape for your dog. Have them put the "Do Not Pet" patches on it. Another question regarding protective instincts in your dog. Be careful what you wish for. There is nothing wrong with wanting your dog to be aloof which is a character trait of the GSD. If you are looking for more than that, but still are not interested in sport, go to a good trainer rather than trying to do it yourself.
Robbin, are you talking about Rocky Point in Mexico? If so, did you read what you need in order to take your dog/s across the border? http://www.puerto-penasco.com/customs.html
If they decide to give you a hard time and you don't have the proper certificates from your vet, your dog could end up quarantined.
