I've talked to some very experienced sch trainers that have expressed to me that they believe for the most part the idea of a dog being able to follow a trail of dead skin cells is crazy. According to these people, a dog is only able to track based on distinguishing crushed vegitation from undisturbed ground. Are there any of you that there that have first hand experience with air scent training, specifically following trails over pavement. Also any good books on this topic?

That is too funny....have they ever read Syrotuck, Scent and the Scenting Dog?
Tracking, Trailing and Airscent are totally different things. The concept (finding human life) is the same but the methods of training and even the dogs vary greatly, IMHO.

Ed has some good books, I really do not "read" a whole lot of books, takes up too much of my training time. The books I have read are dog eared and used since I go back to reference them.
Some of the books I like a lot so not really have a whole lot to do with SAR per say, rather, dog behavior.
Don't Shoot the Dog, The Other End of the Leash are two that I use.
There is also the Culture Clash which is okay. Training the Canine Athlete is a good one to have on hand also.
A couple of SAR books that are in my library other than all the Syrotuck books are Guide to Search and Rescue Dogs and Search and Rescue Dogs "Training the K-9 Hero" by the American Rescue Dog Association.

When a dog trials for an FH title the dog has to follow multiple tracks across several different types of surfaces, including hard no vegitation surfaces. Like Carol said trailing or tracking is very different from air scenting. Jim and Philis dobbs have some on line articles about training you may enjoy. I have seen Philis dog track on a trail that was 3 and 4 hours old
