I am still looking for a pup and considering a few diferent breeders. My question: is there a site here, or elsewhere that shows how to read or interpret (sp.) hip x-rays. Some of the breeders that I've looked at show the X-rays from the Penn-hip?? I'm under the assumption that the shown x-rays are "good" or "top-of-the-line" becasue they are posted??
I want to be able to distinguish from good and bad hips??
Here is a discussion on Pennhip and OFA. You should be looking at the results of the xrays and not the xrays themself because most people are not trained to diagnosis the finer points of dysplasia.
OFA - only gets a number if it has passing hips. Passing hips in OFA are given a rating of fair, good, or excellent. You can search for a dog's results at http://www.offa.org
Pennhip - measures the distraction level in each hips. The lower the number, the tighter the hips (which is good). The highest numbered hip is then compared to the rest of the dogs of that breed that have been Pennhip'd and you are given a percentage of where your dog stands compared to the other dogs of its breed.
For example,
My male ACD was Pennhip'd .32/.36 which Pennhip stated was better than 90% of the ACDs tested so far.
My friend's male was Pennhip'd .39/.53 and Pennhip stated that this dog was better than 70% of the ACDs tested so far.
